The Revelatory Teachings of

Sun Myung Moon

"The Divine Principle is not just a teaching; it is the truth that will liberate humanity and bring God's kingdom to earth. Its most important message is that we are all God's children, destined to live in a world of true love and unity."
- Sun Myung Moon

The Old and New Testaments provide us with an account of God’s efforts to reach out to His children from the creation of the world until the time of Jesus and his followers. However, many fundamental aspects of the truth were not clearly revealed, even at the time of Christ. As Saint Paul confessed in 1 Corinthians 13:9-10, “For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.”

Sun Myung Moon’s journey to discover the fullness of the truth began at the age of 15 when he had a life-changing encounter with Jesus. Over the next nine years, he prayed and fasted as he desperately cried out to God for answers. The truths that were revealed to Reverend Moon are not his own, but rather the fulfillment of Jesus’ promise to mankind.

The Divine Principle: the core teaching of Sun Myung Moon

The Principle of Creation

  • God’s original ideal of Creation is eternal, absolute and unchanging.  He will not rest until that purpose is accomplished.
  • When God created, He planned a world of love and harmony which would reflect His own nature.
  • God's purpose for creating human beings is to fulfill the Blessings given to His children in Genesis 1:28 - to be fruitful, multiply, and have dominion over creation.
  • God gave man the ability and responsibility to be co-creators through obedience to God’s Word.
  • Human beings were created in spirit and in flesh, so that we would live eternally in Heaven with our families after maturing in love during our earthly life.

The Fall of Man

  • Rather than being obedient to God’s Word, our first ancestors committed the Original Sin, resulting in their separation from God.
  • The story of the Fall of Man in chapter 3 of the book of Genesis is a revelation to man - a symbolic representation of the true nature of the Original Sin.
  • Knowing that God’s purpose is centered on love, Satan tempted the immature Eve, and through Eve, Adam, to “eat the fruit”, resulting in their covering their lower parts in shame.
  • By corrupting the first ancestors and separating them from God, Satan passed on his fallen nature to Adam and Eve, their children and descendants, establishing dominion over all mankind.

The Purpose of the Messiah

  • Despite man’s disobedience toward God at the Fall, God’s purpose of Creation remained unchanged.
  • Although Adam was created as a sinless child of God, due to the Fall, he passed on the original sin to his children and all humankind.
  • To fulfill the purpose of Creation, God needed to bring a new, sinless Adam into the world who could remain faithful and give rebirth to fallen mankind by establishing a new, Godly lineage.
  • After 4,000 biblical years of preparation, Jesus came to the world in the position of the new Adam.
  • Although Jesus pleaded with the people of Israel to follow Him, their lack of faith led to His death on the cross, and the promise of the Second Coming of Christ.

The Principles of Restoration

  • As a loving parent, God could not bear to see His children living in misery, cut off from His love after the Fall.
  • God purpose of Creation could never be fulfilled as long as His children remained in a state of sinfulness, under Satan’s dominion.
  • Therefore, immediately after the Fall, God began His work of saving His children, which would require restoring them to their original, sinless state.
  • Beginning with Adam’s own family, God reached out to fallen man to prepare a foundation to receive a New Adam – the Messiah.
  • Although God’s parental heart was to restore His children as soon as possible, God would never take away free will and the human portion of responsibility which was endowed at the beginning of Creation.
  • God raised up central figures such as Abel, Noah, Abraham and Moses to be His representatives and champions in the course of restoration.

The Parallels of History

  • Despite repeated failures by fallen men in history, God never gave up.
  • In the process of restoration, we see history repeating itself as God worked with various central figures and nations to accomplish the purpose of restoration.
  • The history of Israel and the history of Christianity closely parallel one another.
  • By studying the numerical patterns of repetition in biblical and modern history, God’s plan for completing His work of salvation and restoration is clearly revealed.

The Second Coming of Christ

  • God will surely send His Son again to complete the work of salvation.
  • Through studying the parallels of history along with biblical prophecy, we can understand that we are now living in the Last Days.
  • While some will know of Christ’s return, “The kingdom of God is not coming in ways that can be observed” although it is “in the midst of you.” (Luke 17:20-21)
  • Through the Second Coming, the blessings God gave to Adam and Eve in the Garden will be restored, fulfilling the ultimate goal of salvation and restoration. (Matthew 6:10)

The Consummation of Human History (The Last Days)

  • There are many prophecies in the Bible regarding the end of the world, or the “last days.” It is critical that we understand the meaning of these prophecies from God’s viewpoint.
  • God wants to put an end to the world of evil which is dominated by Satan and instead establish a world where He will reign – the Kingdom of Heaven on Earth.
  • There have been multiple critical points in God’s providence that God intended to be the end of Satan’s world.
  • In every case, man’s portion of responsibility plays a critical role.
  • We can see many signs of the Last Days in our time.

Resurrection

  • God warned Adam and Eve that on the day they disobeyed His commandment they would surely die. They ate the fruit - yet continued to live and multiply.
  • Jesus told one of His followers in Luke 9:60, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God.”
  • To understand the true meaning of Resurrection, we must understand what it means to pass from death to life.
  • The death caused by the Fall was spiritual death – the separation of man from God.
  • God has been working throughout history to restore spiritually dead human beings back to a state where we can experience the fullness of God love and goodness.

Predestination

  • Many Christians believe that all actions and events have been predestined from the beginning of time, including who will go to Heaven and who will go to Hell.
  • While some Bible verses seem to support the idea of absolute predestination, other verses point to the importance of free will and responsibility in determining our future.
  • If we have an incorrect understanding of predestination, we may believe that nothing we do will make any difference, since the outcome is predetermined.
  • God’s ultimate purpose of establishing His Kingdom is absolutely predestined. However, as clearly shown throughout the Bible, the path to the fulfillment of God’s Will can change depending on man’s response to God’s Word.

Christology

  • Christology is the study of Christ. Is Christ God, human or something else?
  • The word “Christ” comes from the Greek word “Christos,” meaning the anointed or chosen one.
  • To have a true relationship with Christ, we must have a correct understanding of who it is we are relating to.
  • Adam was created as the first sinless son of God, and together with Eve, should have established God’s Kingdom on Earth.
  • However, Adam and Eve submitted to Satan before being able to fulfill their mission as the true ancestors of mankind.
  • God must send a new sinless Adam to accomplish what the first Adam failed to do. He must establish the Kingdom of God on earth by restoring the Three Blessings.

The Eight Great Textbooks

Sun Myung Moon designated eight textbooks which capture the essence of his teachings. He believed and stated that these eight textbooks constituted the official cannon of his life’s work and admonished his followers that by studying the collection the will of God would be realized on the Earth. These textbooks, which provide truth and revelation not previously revealed in the Old and New Testaments, are the Completed Testament given to mankind for this age.

Below are Rev. Moon’s words from January 2012 explaining the significance of the Eight Great Textbooks as the last words he would impart to mankind:

“These have been prepared based on my triumphs over six or seven life-or-death situations, including six periods of unjust imprisonment. I am leaving behind eight textbooks and teaching materials for humankind to use for all eternity. Altogether, these are published in almost a thousand volumes. These are textbooks you will have to read and study even after you go to the spirit world. They are not just teachings that come from the mind of one person; they are textbooks and teaching materials that teach the heavenly way that God has granted to His suffering children for their salvation.”

2. Exposition of the Divine Principle, 1996

The Divine Principle is a systematic teaching explaining the nature of God and man, the purpose of God’s creation, the origin of evil, and the path of restoration over the course of human history. The Principle also addresses many of the misunderstandings previously held by spiritual people and religious leaders, shedding new light on topics such as the nature of the afterlife, predestination, and what we should expect at Christ’s return.

Reverend Moon oversaw the writing of each version of the Principle, from the original version, written in 1957, to the canonized version known as Exposition of the Divine Principle published in 1996. The Divine Principle provides an understanding of the world from God’s viewpoint, incorporating biblical, historical, and scientific references.

3. Cheon Seong Gyeong [Heavenly Scripture]

Cheon Seong Gyeong is a 2500-page anthology of excerpts from Rev. Sun Myung Moon’s speeches given over the course of his lifetime and organized by topics. He referred to this publication as Heaven’s Holy Scripture and insisted that no one should ever change it. Cheon Seong Gyeong is a valuable resource for study and for daily inspiration.

4. The Cheon Il Guk Family Pledge
— Nation of cosmic peace and unity pledge

The Family Pledge is a proclamation and a promise to Heaven that can be recited by all the members of a family, especially on Sundays and Holy Days. The eight points of the Pledge serve as a reminder of the significance of our families in the culture of Heaven, as well as our position and responsibility to God and to mankind.

5. Pyeong Hwa Shin Gyeong (Peace Messages 1 - 17)

Pyeong Hwa Shin Gyeong is a collection of seventeen speeches given by the Reverend Sun Myung Moon. He described these speeches as a revolutionary declaration in getting to know God and Heaven and the providential point of view, clarifying the path to establish our eternal homeland that God governs. These speeches represent the core of Rev. Moon’s message to mankind.

6. True Family—Gateway to Heaven

The book True Family – Gateway to Heaven contains special historical and providential messages from Heaven received by Rev. Moon. Sun Myung Moon received the calling from Heaven at the early age of 16, offering his life to God for the purpose of ending the sorrow of God and mankind. He offered countless hours of prayer, shedding tears, sweat, and blood for God and humanity.

These precious messages were given to mankind by Rev. Moon from the 1950’s until the 2,000’s.

7. World Scripture

World Scripture: A Comparative Anthology of Sacred Texts (1991) is a journey through the sacred writings of the world’s great religions. Organized by subject, the quotations, passages, and excerpts from different religious traditions provide readers with easy access to teachings on several hundred topics, such as the nature of God, the purpose of life, life after death, and the meaning of salvation. The Rev. Sun Myung Moon commissioned the compilation of World Scripture.

World Scripture and the Teachings of Sun Myung Moon (World Scripture II) builds on the foundation of World Scripture. Scriptures of the world’s religions, including the teachings of Rev. Moon, have been examined systematically to illuminate their universal teachings and highlight their common ground. Rev. Moon commissioned World Scripture II, which was published in 2007, on the occasion of his eighty-eighth birthday.

8. Owner of Peace, Owner of Lineage

Rev. Sun Myung Moon delivered the content of this speech on July 7, 2009 at East Garden in New York. Later in the year 2009 he stated that this speech constitutes his eighth textbook. The four-hour speech emphasizes the importance of divine love and family in establishing God’s kingdom. He explains how God has been working in providential history to establish His divine, pure blood lineage with the goal of bringing about one family under God.
