In 1992, Rev. Moon declared the end of the Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity. He established the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, fostering a global community of families from diverse races, faiths, and cultures, united in the conviction that God-centered love, strong marriages, and thriving families are the foundations for addressing society’s core challenges.
Renowned for conducting large-scale wedding ceremonies, Rev. Moon, starting in 1997, invited individuals from all religious backgrounds to dedicate their marriages to God and global harmony. These World Peace Blessing ceremonies commenced with prayers from leaders of various faiths. Newlyweds and couples renewing their commitments vow to love faithfully, live in peace, and raise their children and grandchildren to value purity and loyalty. Couples who unite across racial and religious divides make a unique contribution to peace, pledging to foster understanding, respect, and unity within their families.
Rev. Moon proposed an international assembly of religious, civic, and political leaders to enhance the United Nations’ peacekeeping efforts. The Interreligious and International Federation for World Peace, renamed the Universal Peace Federation (UPF) in 2005, operates globally with Ambassadors for Peace dedicated to promoting peace in their countries and beyond.
Following the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States, Rev. Moon convened a peace conference in October 2001, uniting global religious and political leaders. In December 2001, he organized a groundbreaking conference in Indonesia for Muslim leaders, titled Islam and the Future World of Peace, highlighting his belief in Islam’s vital role in the pursuit of global peace.
Rev. Moon tirelessly tackled the world’s most intractable issues, including fostering peace in the Middle East and achieving reconciliation between North and South Korea. The Middle East Peace Initiative reflects his approach, engaging leaders from government, academia, religion, and the arts in interfaith missions to conflict zones.
The Universal Peace Federation, founded in 2005, supports the United Nations’ peace efforts through a global council of leaders. Its Global Peace Council includes distinguished figures from every continent, and its Ambassadors for Peace are committed to the vision of a global family under God. UPF holds Special Consultative Status with the UN’s Economic and Social Council. It was launched in September 2005 at a grand event at Lincoln Center in New York City, followed by a World Peace Tour establishing chapters across six continents, covering over 70,000 miles and 60 time zones, concluding in Toronto three months later.
While the internet connects people globally through information, no physical infrastructure links all continents. During the 2005 and 2006 UPF Peace Tours, Rev. Moon advocated for a Bering Strait crossing to bridge cultural, religious, geographic, and political divides.
Beginning in 2006, a number of Rev. and Mrs. Moon's children and adult grandchildren, accompanied by their spouses, joined Mrs. Moon on a world tour to 120 nations, dedicated to world peace. Audiences worldwide were inspired that Rev. Moon’s important work is being effectively continued through the dedication of the second and third generations of his family.
For decades Cheongpyeong Lake northeast of Seoul was a beloved prayer retreat for Rev. Moon. As he prayed in the hills nearby, his conviction grew that one day there would be a peace village here and people from all over the world would come to his homeland to learn peace.
On April 16, 2008, Rev. Moon announced to church leaders that he was placing his seventh son, Hyung Jin, in charge of the world church, stating: “Currently, there is no one among our church members who surpasses Hyung Jin in his standard of faith or any other way. I am appointing him.”
In January 2009, on three separate occasions and two continents, Rev. Moon formally placed his crown on Hyung Jin. In each ceremony, the heads of tribes and nations from around the world offered crowns to God. Rev. Moon stated:
“In the context of the Coronation Ceremony for the Establishment of the Sabbath Realm of the True Parents of Heaven, Earth, and Humanity, I report to Hananim that I transfer and pass on the Blessing of the True Parents (to this couple). Aju.” (SMM January 15 & 31, 2009)
On June 5, 2012, in Las Vegas, Nevada, Rev. Moon declared that Cain and Abel unity had been achieved, for the first time in his family, between his two sons Kook Jin Justin Moon, and Hyung Jin Sean Moon. He offered this unity up for the glory of God, and also declared that this victory signaled the completion of the work of True Parents.
A relentless champion for peace, Rev. Moon and his wife traveled across Asia, Europe, North America, and Africa in 2011, delivering public addresses on Building a World of Universal Peace.
Rev. Sun Myung Moon passed away on September 3, 2012, due to pneumonia complications. He is survived by his wife, ten of their 14 children, and over 40 grandchildren.
